After joining the Foreign Service in 1986, he was appointed Consul in Bordeaux in 1989 and then posted to the Embassy of Italy in Riyadh in 1991. Returning to the Rome headquarters, he served at the Secretariat General and at the Directorate General for Cultural Relations.
In May 1999 he was appointed Diplomatic Adviser of the Minister of Heritage and Culture.
From September 2000 to August 2004, he was Counselor at the Italian Permanent Mission to the International Organizations in Geneva, in charge for Humanitarian and Migration Affairs.
From September 2005 to March 2007 he served at the New York Office of the IOM (International Organization for Migration).
From June 2007 he was Diplomatic Advisor of the Minister for Youth and Sport.
From June 2008 he served, at the Directorate General for European Integration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In this capacity he has been responsible for the negotiation of important legislative texts and has been the coordinator of the Italian negotiating team for the EU multiannual Financial Framework.
In January 2010 he was promoted Minister Plenipotentiary. In April 2013 he was named Coordinator for the program of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In July 2013 he was appointed Deputy Director General for the European Union/Principal Director for European Integration.
Between 2010 and 2013 he has also been a professor at the LUISS University in Rome, teaching Peacekeeping Principles and Practice; in 2012-13 he has been Senior Visiting Fellow at the International Peace Institute in New York.
He is married to Natalia Quintavalle, currently Consul General of Italy in New York, and has one daughter.
